Spring Concert

Palm Sunday 13th April 2025  3.00 pm - St George's Church, Altrincham

We will celebrate the start of Holy Week in a traditional manner by singing Maunder's powerful oratorio Olivet to Calvary.  This tradition of performing Olivet to Calvary on Palm Sunday began shortly after its composition, gaining popularity because of its vivid musical portrayal of Christ's journey to the cross. The piece's dramatic, reflective nature is well-suited for the contemplative mood of the season.

The  sacred cantata recalls the scenes which mark the last few days of Christ's life on earth. It begins with Christ's jubilant journey to Jerusalem and ends  with the Crucifixion at Calvary. It is interspersed with congregational hymns which reflect on the scenes. The oratorio's combination of biblical texts with Maunder's emotional score helps to highlight the sacred story, encouraging listeners to contemplate the depth of the Easter story and the sacrifice it represents.
